3rd International Conference on Data Management organized by IMT Ghaziabad

Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad organized 3rd International Conference on Data Management was held on 11th and 12th March 2010 in collaboration with University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The conference, co-chaired by Dr. Poonam Garg and Dr. Susmi Routray, was attended by over 200 delegates from India, Bangladesh, USA, Canada, Turkey, Singapore and many other countries. The conference witnessed a rich exchange of ideas amongst IT professionals. The delegates felt that the overall experience was enriching and the high-end discussions that they had enlarged the spectrum of their subject knowledge.

Academicians, industry experts, research scholars and IT practitioners shared copious flow of knowledge during these conference days. They discussed that data is growing exponentially. But enterprises need maximum scalability, performance and production for its intensive applications. An effective data management in terms of quality and consistency across the enterprise can drive significant business benefits. Data management in firms enables intelligent business decisions and impacts positively all business processes ensuring customer delight. The major challenges of an effective data management for any organization are heterogeneous sources of data across multiple applications and databases, customer driven markets, global slowdown, high costs per internal and external transaction for organization due to siloed data stores, challenges in managing customer churn and new customer acquisition.

The conference was inaugurated by Mr. Gerarld Seniuk Chief Judge of Saskatchewan. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Rajat Nag (Managing Director General, Asian Development Bank), and Mr. Bharat Rele (Director-Solution Engineering for SAP India). Mr. Nag’s keynote address focused on the future of the Asia and Pacific region in the global economy following strong economic growth in recent decades. The address then highlighted the need for inclusive growth to address the challenge of the "two faces of Asia" where one face is evidenced by glittering skylines in Asian capitals while the other reveals abject poverty. Finally, Mr. Nag focused on the key challenges for India. He also discussed the importance, among others, of infrastructure improvements, environmental concerns, governance reforms and India's leadership on regional cooperation and integration initiatives for a more prosperous South Asia and global economy. Mr. Bharat Rele’s keynote address was focused on Managing the Lifeblood of Your Organization. He explained that heart of any organization is Data. Almost every department in the organization depends on it. When properly managed, information can help you run your business effectively and efficiently by providing critical data needed to drive business processes and decisions. Information can also be a source of knowledge helping your organization increase competitiveness and profitability.

The plenary session is being conducted in two parts by Mr. Swapan Purkait who is the CEO of Nettech, a leading information technology consulting and development firm specialized in the area of computer networking and Ruchin Kumar who is the principal architect of Safenet which is a global leader in information security. Mr Swapan has presented demonstration of hacking and guided the audience regarding the measures to be taken to safeguard their network against unethical hacking and Mr. Ruchir Kumar demonstrated how to secure your information, Network, email & desktops.

We received around 300 papers and as an upshot of a double blind review process we selected 125 papers for presentation. Technical sessions were organized in 21 parallel tracks of data management, computer science and engineering and communication network and security, computer applications, and ERP/CRM.

The conference was just an episode in the series of conferences planned to be taken with the annual periodicity. Dr. Poonam Garg, the conference co-chair, closed the event by announcing the theme of the conference to be held next year in the month of January with its thematic focus on data management and ethical hacking.

CONVOCATION 2010

Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad, Nagpur Organizes Convocation 2010

Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad and Nagpur jointly organized Convocation 2010 on March 20, 2010. The Chief Guest was Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman UB Group, and the function was presided over by Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India and President Board of Governors, Institute of Management Technology. Other dignitaries gracing the occasion were Mr. Bakul Nath, Vice-President, IMT, Dr. Anwar Ali, Director IMT, Ghaziabad and Dr. Rajendra Naragundkar, Director, IMT, Nagpur.

Dr. Vijay Mallya in the convocation address stressed on the importance of self – confidence and creative thinking in his convocation address. He urged the students to believe in themselves and face the world with self – confidence. He said that India offered the largest unique opportunity for development considering the fact that India has a very young average age demographically. He said that the future of the country lay on the students. For young energetic minds, now being trained to think by faculty, collective knowledge of both experience and innovation is necessary.

He stressed on the need to build upon this foundation that the outgoing batch has been fortunate enough to get. He gave the example of Kingfisher’s strategy. Although advertising alcohol is banned in India, Kingfisher has been able to achieve the status of being the largest home – grown indigenous brand sold in over 55 countries. Dr. Mallya said that we must talk to a brand and the brand needs to talk to us. Visual image is important but a brand should be a visual communicator. This is what differentiates a brand from a super brand.

“Please be leaders. Don’t be followers. You can create, you can innovate. The fundamental requirement is confidence in you. Let your confidence be your biggest strength. And let your creative mind think out of the box. If u do it, this country is in very safe hands with youngsters like you.” were Dr. Mallya’s concluding statements.

Shri Kamal Nath mentioned that the global economy is just about recovering from one of the worst recessions it has experienced in eight decades – some economists say: the worst recession, period. Whichever way one looks at it, it is undeniable that the last two and a half years mark an inflection point – the post-recession world that we shall experience, in economic terms, is unlikely to resemble the world that preceded the recession.

Dr Anwar Ali, Director, IMT Ghaziabad in his annual report was upbeat about the overall academic and extra curricular achievements. IMT Ghaziabad has been ranked as one of the top ten business schools of India along with IIMs in surveys conducted by Career 360, Business India, Open C-fore, Outlook, CSR-GHRDC and Indian Management Survey.

Tete-a-tete with the Director, IMT, Ghaziabad

Dr. Anwar Ali, the newly appointed director of Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad enjoys competition in the education sector and feels research in management is the only way to move forward for business institutions. Following is what he had to say about IMT-Ghaziabad and about IMT as a brand:

What are the unique propositions that IMT-Ghaziabad stands for?
List three ways in which it is different from B-schools in the same league

IMT Ghaziabad is unique in the sense that it starts training of students as managers from day one. All committees are run and managed by the students, which gives them an early exposure to the managerial life. Secondly it offers the largest number of alliances with foreign universities. Exchange programs with these international universities help the students form relationships that enhance their career. We also have an agreement with the Harvard Business School (HBS) through which we buy their case studies on a per student basis, thus providing the students with authentic study material from HBS.

Have the admissions been affected in the light of recession?
What changes have been incorporated in the curriculum to counter recession?

Although the admissions haven’t been affected due to recession, there have been few changes in the curriculum to prepare the students of IMT for recession like situations. We have strengthened the course in risk management and have got the most recent cases from Harvard Business School on how companies collapsed during recession. This is to teach the students the practices in management they should avoid in their careers. We are also teaching students the aspects of the governance of PSUs through which they successfully overcame recession.

What is the general profile of the candidate who is called for GD-PI at the IMT?
What do you look for in a candidate in the GD-PI round; how much weightage is given to work experience?

At IMT, candidates are called for GD-PI solely on the basis of their CAT scores. During the GD-PI round we look for a candidate’s communication skills, confidence and also his passion for management. The weightage given to work experience has been increased from this year although there is no minimum requirement criterion. We have increased the weightage of work experience to initiate more valuable discussion in the classroom, since the students who have worked before will be in a better position to ask relevant questions. This in turn will also encourage our faculty to update itself regularly.

What is the strength of your faculty? How do you ensure that they deliver the best to your students?
We have around 420 (errata: 60) faculty members in our institute. Most of them are involved in research; there are over 150 publications on current topics by our faculty. To ensure that they deliver the best, we have an annual performance management system where we evaluate the faculty member on the basis of units earned. Any member of the faculty is required to earn a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 700 units where 300 units is equivalent to teaching 6 courses. Apart from that there are a number of faculty meetings where issues relating to teaching are discussed openly and thus resolved amongst the members.

How have the placements been affected in the light of recession? What steps have been taken to counter that?
The placements have been affected considering that we took almost five to six months to place the batch that usually took only a couple of days. To avoid such situation in the future, we are targeting more companies and also targeting companies in the sectors that are doing well. Students are also being counseled to take up different kind of jobs, like in profiles apart from marketing and finance which may place them remote areas of the country.

Throw some light on the IMT Dubai campus. How did that come into being?
IMT Dubai was started when Dubai was at its helm of growth and development and the demand for business graduates was high. The target students were both the student population of India and Dubai. We also realized the need for part time MBA for working professionals in Dubai and thus we offer part time MBA with evening classes for people who are already working in Dubai.

What relations do IMT Ghaziabad, IMT Nagpur and IMT Dubai share with each other? Do you think each one of them will become competition to each other in the coming years?
All the institutes of IMT are separate independent institutions and thus just share the brand name between each other. IMT Nagpur was started in 2004 but it has developed faster than any other institute in its league. Talking about competition, we will be happy to compete with more quality institutions in the market and thus will enjoy the competition.
