MBA Placements – Clinch your dream job

You've had two years of rigorous exposure to the MBA grind - assignments, projects, festivals, training and the whole gamut. But the real test for every MBA student is during the placement season. It is that time of the year when young men and women, clad in formals, wait outside for a company visiting the college campus, revising their much-rehearsed answers to anticipated questions and hoping that it is their D day.

With the placement scenario increasingly governed by unspoken alliances between companies and colleges, the freedom of a student to pick a company from a basket of choices could be under threat, say experts. Many people say that the lack of transparency on the part of college managements to unhealthy tie-ups with companies that leave students with little choice.

The latent contracts and invisible ties between management authorities of private colleges and HR professionals of companies result in companies dictating terms to the college. “Since colleges are responsible only till the students are placed, companies with their rigorous training, their demand, posting and transfer mechanisms make sure that the people who do not perform are removed whenever necessary,” says a HR placement consultant.

For students, these tie-ups and placements largely determine a college's worth.

While companies maintain that they insist on the first slot only to get the best out of all, colleges say that it has become mandatory to show 100 per cent placement as it is good for their branding.

But the question remains what is the reality behind this 100 per cent placement? Is it just to show it on papers or do these MBA colleges really want to build your career??

Moreover the quality of placement should be not to look for the package but for the role offered. There are many criteria’s which determine the quality of placements – brand and culture of the firm, profile offered and lastly the compensation. There are different sectors in which a student wants to pursue his/her career like technology, FMCG, Media, Pharmacy and many more.

Many colleges make arrangements so as to segregate the diverse sectors and the respective students who have interest in that field.

Thus the bottom line for MBA students is that they should look it as a long term investment which will be paid off in the coming years. Your first job will always be questioned on the work you have done and not for the package and brand you have worked with. So follow your interest and passion to build a successful career. IMT provides you an opportunity to grow with them by offering world class placements.

The Age of Information

The Information Age, also commonly known as the Computer Age or Information Era, is an idea that the current age will be characterized by the ability of individuals to transfer information freely, and to have instant access to knowledge that would have been difficult or impossible to find previously. The idea is linked to the concept of a Digital Age or Digital Revolution.

Impact of information age on education sector

Nowadays the role of IT, especially internet, in the education sector plays an important role, especially in the process of empowering the technology into the educational activities. Internet on the other side can be the most effective way to increase the student’s knowledge. The IT has been developing very rapidly nowadays. Therefore, in order to balance it, the whole educational system should be reformed and integrated into educational activities. The influence of IT cannot be ignored in our student’s lives. So, the learning activities should be reoriented and reformulated, from the manual source centered to the open source ones.

Impact of information age on corporate world

The growth in corporate use of the Internet and its usage for accessing marketing information highlight the increasing importance of the Internet as a commercial infrastructure. Today the Internet provides the largest common interactive data communications infrastructure in the world. It also provides wide access to content and a platform for information dissemination to users. In the near future this infrastructure will advance to provide real-time multimedia capabilities. The business use of these capabilities and the emerging infrastructure will dramatically alter business practice and competition.

Conclusion

The Internet offers a set of technological tools that presents both opportunities and challenges for developing countries. The benefits of this age is directly related to how investments in IT are influenced and supported by regulatory frameworks that promote innovation, access and use. Moreover developing countries should undertake to invest in the necessary macroeconomic policies that will facilitate an environment where the domestic population is able to adapt to the existence of the Internet.

Fostering Entrepreneurship

When management education was introduced in India, it was unheard of. However, within a few decades it revolutionized the corporate landscape. But even 20 years post liberalization, not all Indian B-schools produce entrepreneurs who can give Indian economy the much needed boost.

As per a recent report by Morgan Stanley, India is poised to become the world's fastest growing economy surpassing China. In fact, by 2013,we might be growing at 9.5%. And by 2020, we would be adding a workforce of 136 million, which is more than the population of Japan. Seems that we are unstoppable and a truly globalised economy. But before you fantasise any further digest the fact that India is ranked second from last in Globalisation Index (GI) ranking. Part substance, part symbolism, it has been our ineffectiveness to promote entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship courses were started with an aim to fill the gap that separates ideas from execution. Sadly, for India, even after 20 years of liberalisation the void has not been filled. A case study on Bill Gates and Warren Buffet looks extremely motivating, but the reality is far from a bunch of papers. I would say that bringing in successful entrepreneurs to teach full time courses would be an excellent development. But for this we need to have supportive infrastructure. We need to create wealth, get more people on board, create more equality institutions and see that the entire population benefits. If this vision can be fostered then entrepreneurship will flourish.

There has been a quite a few success stories. For instance, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, Founder of Naukri.com kept struggling for more than a decade but never gave up on his dreams. His patience finally paid off and Naukri became the leading job portal.

As far as performance of India is concerned, where contribution of small and medium enterprises to the GDP is just 5%. "India lacks support for budding entrepreneurs as ideas are not supported  by the financial funding. Also the bureaucracy, red-tapeism and wide spread corruption makes it difficult for budding entrepreneurs to get through. Besides, structural challenges and poverty driven illiterate rural mass too are some ever surging adverse factors.

Now just to support this program all the B-schools should focus on entrepreneurial programmes where in students are required to launch, run and dissolve a business idea so that students can apply their theoretical knowledge into practical life. If I were given the opportunity to formulate a programme today, it would cover the standard curriculm, but with an integration of such exercises at regular intervals. This would help the student's to integrate the two learning's. This puts them in charge of their own business idea and clearly attaches the importance of everything one would do in a business.

It's high time that Indian B-schools should pay attention to the shift in scenario, i.e, cultural creative entrepreneurs.

IMT Dubai - Approved and accredited by the Government of the UAE

While selecting a management institute, students accord significant weightage to the kind of exposure it offers, its placement record and so on. The Dubai campus of the Institute of Management Technology (IMT),Ghaziabad just does that. Founded in 2006, IMT Dubai offers an accredited MBA programme as well as sundry executive courses. Located in the Dubai International Academic City, the institute is the first Indian management college to be granted accreditation by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE, for its quality courses and reputable heritage. The accreditation ensures that the MBA programme operates at international standards of quality, allowing the BSchool to achieve a global level of excellence. “IMT Dubai’s pedagogy is grounded around two pillars.

The first is the rigorous coursework, which provides students with the tools for professional success. The second is the ‘effervescence’ that is derived from the exposure of IMT students to the professional world,” says Dr. Arun Mohan Sherry, Chairman, Joint Admission Committee. This exposure gives students a degree of maturity and experience that is unparalleled by other business studies. The two-year MBA programme at IMT Dubai has a strong industry interface achieved through an internship programme, company project and a continuous interaction with the industry.

Adds Dr. Farhad Rad-Serecht, Director, IMT Dubai, “Our vision is to bring world class management education, training and consulting within the easy reach of management professionals seeking global careers. We enjoy some stellar international linkages like those with the Brussels-based European Foundation for Management Development, the Burgundy School of Business based in France, HEC Montreal based in Canada and the London Metropolitan University.” As far as eligibility is concerned, applicants to the MBA Programme must hold a Bachelors degree from an accredited university. They are expected to have a CGPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test.

The minimum score for TOEFL is 550 (paper-based) and 80 (Internet-based) or 6.0 for IELTS. Although work experience is not mandatory, applicants with work experience are preferred. The campus also enjoys a strategic advantage in terms of location as Dubai today serves a market of more than 1.5 billion people and is ranked as the world’s third largest re-export centre. The city being a nerve centre for multinational business conglomerates opens up lucrative placement avenues across diverse sectors. More than a third of the Fortune 500 companies have their presence locally. Apart from a pivotal edge in terms of placements, the IMT Dubai campus translates to a slew of benefits for its students. For example, students are exposed to people from different cultures as the city is a cosmopolitan hub. There are a number of Indians residing there which creates a feeling of a home away from home. And the Emirate also scores very high in terms of individual security.

International Workshop on Future Directions of ANN 12th Nov, 2010

The goal of Computational Intelligence (CI) is to help inventing intelligent computers by mimicking the way we, the human beings, approach problem solving. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is viewed as the most nearer model of the human nervous system. Naturally, the curiosity surrounding the ANN has emerged stronger as compared to the other components of CI viz. Fuzzy Logic & Evolutionary Computation. Despite rapid strides made over the past couple of decades, the gap between the expectations from ANN and its potential, as hitherto unearthed, leaves a lot to be desired. This necessitates a relook at the strategy that has been adopted so far towards the design & development of ANN.

The Intl. Workshop on Future Directions of Artificial Neural Networks (FDANN10) is aimed at creating a platform where the researchers will converge & deliberate on the possible roadmap for the future of ANN. Eminent speakers will share their frustrations as well as excitements with the audience & put forward their views vis-a-vis the route ANN should traverse in order to make it more stimulating & more useful. Sponsored by the International Neural Networks Society (INNS) & intended to be held in conjunction with the 2nd International Conference on Information Technology & Business Intelligence (ITBI10) at Institute of Management Technology, Nagpur, India, FDANN10 is a humble effort towards creating an awareness about the need to revisit the entire strategy as adopted so far as well as popularizing ANN, particularly in India.
